Dear All,

Here's the final update on the CABI/Black Rock Forest event. Please note the important updates about the start time: we now aim to meet at the Forest Lodge of Black Rock Forest at 10AM and begin the event at 10.30. We aim to finish at 7PM and head home.

The plan is: split into groups and start at 10.30 AM with morning bird-banding workshops at 3 different stations (inner forest, forest edge, and pond-edge habitats: Zak Aidala, Beki Croston, and Mark Hauber), a forest walk, and a wildlife sound/birdsong-recording session (rotate between activities); a pizza-lunch at 1PM (delivery); mini-talks and presentations about ongoing research in the CABI and the ABC programs at Hunter College at 2PM; a Sound Analysis Pro bioacoustic software workshop at 3PM (Ofer Tchernicovski and Mark Hauber); an afternoon hike at 4PM to the stone cottage while checking previously installed Hunter ABC nestboxes; and an informal dinner (salad, sandwiches, etc) at 6PM, with departure at 7PM from Black Rock Forest.

The 10 min talks each will feature: Julie Hecht on Physical prompts to anthropomorphism of the domestic dog, Horowitz Dog Cognition Lab, Barnard College, Andrew Fulmer on Save the Queen: Prosocial Contributions in Naked Mole Rats, McCloskey Lab, CSI and Hunter/Biopsychology, Gregory Jeff Barord on Connecting Conservation and Behavior in the Deep, Laboratory for Invertebrate Behavior and Ecology, Brooklyn College, Christian Paylor-Smith on Neural Basis for Learning and Recall in Freshwater Crayfish, LIBE (Laboratory for Invertebrate Behavior and Ecology), CUNY-Brooklyn College, and Zak Aidala and Beki Croston: Studying the field ecology of avian brood parasites, Hunter College/Hauber lab.

Please bring weather-appropriate clothing for forest hikes, sunscreen, binoculars, guide books, insect repellent, wet-weather gear, and be on the look-out for Lyme-disease carrying ticks. We are not responsible for any personal mishaps during this event.

Those taking the bus have already received a message: we leave from 26th St and 10th Ave in Chelsea at 8.30AM.

For those of you driving, please park at the bottom of the dirt road and walk up to the Forest Lodge (a 15 min. hike). Directions are at 129 Continental Road, Cornwall, New York 12518. The physical location (see attached PDF) is at the end of Reservoir Road, turn sharp left at the intersection of 9W and Deerhill Road when coming from NYC.
